Listed are a few links to sites with great copyright-free*, digital war photographs.

Pictures of World War II from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) features photographs of the war taken by American military photographers. The photographs are arranged by topic (France, Germany, Japan, Philippine Islands, the home front, aviation, leaders, the Holocaust, etc.) and feature short captions. These photographs are in the public domain, and credit should be given NARA.

The Artwork and Photography Gallery of the US Army Center of Military History (CMH Online) features many WWII era images. Information presented on CMH Online is considered public information and may be distributed or copied for non-commercial purposes. Use of appropriate byline/photo/image credits is requested.

The photos in the Men and Planes collection from the Air Force Historical Research Agency (AFHRA) Web site show military aircraft from production to battle. These photos are considered public information and may be distributed or copied. Use of appropriate byline/photo/image credits is requested.

The photos in the Capt. Joseph J. Merhar, Jr., Personal Collection show soldiers and aircraft maintenance operations in England during World War II. The Naval Historical Society’s Online Library of Photographs features several collections of WWII photographs, including events in the Atlantic and Pacific theatres, WWII Era WAVES and photographs from the Potsdam conference.

Powers of Persuasion: Poster Art from World War II from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) features posters from the “propaganda war” the U.S. government waged to galvanize public support for the war. Most of these posters were produced by Federal agencies and are therefore in the public domain; check the source of the poster before using.
