The Cultural Horizons of Wisconsin CD-ROM, designed for students in grades 4 through 6, complements the 10-program Cultural Horizons of Wisconsin video series. It is available from the Wisconsin Educational Communications Board (ECB). Compatibility:

The Holstein Backpack

This CD-ROM uses the graphic of a backpack as its main interface element.
As indispensible as students' own backpacks, this backpack icon:
• is accessible on every screen.
• contains tools to navigate through and interact with the content.
• comes in four styles--red with a white stripe, buckskin, purple, and Holstein.
• can be monogrammed with the student's login name.

The backpack contains a variety of exciting and colorful content areas. They are:

Wisconsin Map
Students can explore the entire state thanks to Visits and The Wiscometer.
• Visits feature 20 cultural sojourns to all five of Wisconsin's physical regions. These Visits introduce users to people living in Wisconsin who are learning, celebrating, and/or preserving their unique cultural heritage.
• The Wiscometer provides both the physical and cultural geographical context for the Visits.

My Discoveries
In this electronic notebook, users can access
• a scrapbook with journaling and printing functions; and
• student activities customized for each Visit. Educators can track and assess these activities.

The Tools "pocket," vertically at left, is open.

Explorer
Within Explorer students can find a searchable database of more than 70 ethnic population groups living in Wisconsin. This database is accessible either by ethnic group or countries of origin for each ethnic group. Explorer also offers links to Visits and Cultural Horizons of Wisconsin videos.


Tools
Leading the list of functions in the Tools section is the Navitron, which displays the entire CD's contents on a single screen. This feature enables users to go wherever they want on the CD with a simple mouse-click. Other functions found in Tools are:
• Print
• Help
• Change Backpack to a different color or pattern
• Exit Program to quit

Schools with a policy that requires preview of materials prior to purchase can obtain a preview copy of the Cultural Horizons of Wisconsin CD-ROM through their Regional ECB Liaison. Schools that subscribe to ECB Liaison Services are automatically are eligible for a 10% discount on all teaching materials from the ECB.
