When was the last time your students badgered you for information about the Badger State? And when they did, where did you suggest they look? Where would you look?
Now, you can point your students, as well as yourself, to Digital Wisconsin.
This comprehensive DVD-ROM is a resource-rich digital media library of instructional video and audio, teacher materials, and related Internet links. Produced by the Wisconsin Educational Communications Board (ECB), the collection was compiled mainly for the study of Wisconsin in grades 4 and 5, but it is also of value to higher grades.
What do we mean by “comprehensive”?
Well, for starters, the video materials on the Digital Wisconsin DVD-ROM feature three ECB-produced instructional television (ITV) series, 37 programs in all:
Exploring Wisconsin Our Home
Investigating Wisconsin History
Cultural Horizons of Wisconsin
*All but one Cultural Horizons program, “New Dawn of Tradition: A Wisconsin Powwow,” have closed captioning.
The videos are presented in two ways:
1) Individual Programs, each 15 minutes long, that may
be viewed in their entirety on the computer.
2) Video Clips, hundreds of them, that address focus questions designed to foster student investigation and research. The clips vary in length from 30 seconds to three minutes and are organized around the 10 historical eras and themes identified in the Wisconsin Model Academic Standards for Social Studies.
What’s in it for you?
Plenty. There are unabridged teacher guides — literally hundreds of pages of material — that complement the three ITV series and the Wisconsin CD-ROM, a complete list of focus questions, and corresponding video clip titles listed under the 10 historical eras and themes. Plus, two dozen teaching plans describe ways to incorporate Digital Wisconsin resources into K-12 instruction. These plans were created, tested, and refined by Wisconsin educators during a two-semester pilot test of Digital Wisconsin.
The DVD-ROM also includes a user’s manual, tips for playing and “bookmarking” video clips,
as well as Internet links to academic standards, the ECB’s Digital Parade database, and the ECB help desk.
