The five bodies of water making up the Great Lakes were created 10,000 years ago. Collectively, they hold three-quarters of the world’s standing fresh water, and more than 50 million people live within 100 miles of a Great Lake port.

Because the Great Lakes comprise such a large waterway, they have played a vital role in the lives and histories of our ancestors. To this day, they continue to play that role in many important and vital ways.
