Educators Develop Teacher Resources for Hometown Stories

Carol Popelka
ECB Liaison
CESA 4
West Salem, Wisconsin
How did you get involved in developing educational resources for the Hometown Stories: La Crosse project?
Carol: I’m the ECB Liaison for this
part of the state, and work with K-12
teachers on a regular basis.
Eric: I’m interested in local history and
I teach U.S. history. I thought being
on the curriculum development team
would be a great way to contribute to
something important and something in
which I’m really interested.
How are roles delineated and shared?
Carol: Developing the materials was a
group effort with initial consensus on
the essential questions for each of the
program segments. Then elementary,
middle and high school teachers worked
on lessons appropriate to the grade
levels they teach.

Eric Martin
Social Studies Teacher
Logan High School
La Crosse , Wisconsin
What is your role in developing these educational resources?
Carol: I helped with the initial contacts
to develop the committee; provided
meeting space and support; was a central
point of contact and liaison between the
Educational Communications Board
(ECB), Wisconsin Public Television
(WPT) and the committee; provided
feedback on the lessons; and developed
the program brochure for educators.
Eric: I helped develop a specific presentation
(using Microsoft PowerPoint)
that teachers can use in class to support
the program, along with specific lessons
for the high school level.
What will the educational resources eventually include?
Carol: There are a series of lessons and
activities for each program segment and
for each school level (elementary, middle
school, high school). All materials will
be available on the WPT Web site along
with links to many additional resources.
In what ways do you feel the new
Hometown Stories: La Crosse resources will enhance instructors’ existing curriculum?
Carol: The resources will bring relevance
to social studies and history classes, and
provide engaging and standards-based
follow-up to the “Hometown Stories
(HTS): La Crosse” television program.
Eric: While HTS: La Crosse is about La
Crosse, specifically, many of the themes
from the film are applicable statewide.
Additionally, the resources provided and
developed by the curriculum team are
ready to use and should assist teachers
in their work.

Digital TV Explained
Making the Switch to Digital TV—Will your School be Ready? (PDF Download)
On February 18, 2009, all television broadcast in the United States will become digital.
The benefits of this transition will bring improved sound and picture quality, and ultimately a more efficient use of broadcast ‘space.’
For you and your school district, this means better quality, more choices, and more control over your television. Go to www.dtv.gov and www.dtvtransition.org for more information on this transition.
