National Entrepreneurship Week in Wisconsin—Get Involved!

Celebrate the second annual National Entrepreneurship Week with your students and help
them develop their entrepreneurial spirit. National Entrepreneurship Week, from February
23 - March 1, 2008, is a celebration of American entrepreneurs and the educational programs currently preparing youth to develop a passion toward entrepreneurship as a viable career option.
The Importance of Entrepreneurship Education
The focus of this second year’s celebration includes the importance of entrepreneurship education. National Entrepreneurship Week 2008 provides an opportunity to focus on the innovative ways in which entrepreneurship education can bring together the core academic, technical, and problem solving skills essential for future entrepreneurs.
To build on the momentum of last year’s successful week-long entrepreneurial celebration,
the Wisconsin State Department of Commerce is once again interested in promoting participating organizations’ activities by listing them on its Web site.
Educators can find resources to support their planning and involvement in Entrepreneurship Week planning on the Wisconsin Department of Commerce website at www.commerce.wi.gov/eweek. Here, educators can find more information on the following:
• Events and activities
• Details about the Young Wisconsin Entrepreneur Award
• Links to Web sites with additional information on planning successful events
Questions regarding National Enterpreneurship Week 2008 can be sent to: Carol.Dunn@wisconsin.gov.
The Young Wisconsin Entrepreneur Award
In support of National Entrepreneurship Week, the Wisconsin State Department of Commerce
and the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) are collaborating to offer recognition for entrepreneurial high school students with the Young Wisconsin Entrepreneur Award. Teachers are encouraged to nominate their young high school entrepreneur, one who has created or invented a useful product or service, or even opened their own storefront. The student
selected will be asked to answer questions from other Wisconsin high school students in a
one-hour live Webcast that will be held during National Entrepreneurship Week.
For more information on the nomination process, go to www.commerce.wi.gov/eweek.

Supporting Entrepreneurship through Financial Literacy
The Educational Communications Board (ECB) is actively engaged in the Personal Financial Literacy Committee, an interagency panel dedicated to developing financial literacy resources
for teachers in Wisconsin. Currently, the foundations for a Web site are being researched, one that will provide professional development opportunities for educators as well as personal financial literacy resources for teachers to use in their K-12 classrooms. The date of completion has not yet been determined, but visit www.ecb.org during Summer 2008 for an update!

Leglar Introduces Financial Literacy to Wisconsin Schools
Kristin Leglar
Instructional
Programs Developer Can you describe your job?
I have an
amazing job; I get to create experiences
that take learners beyond the borders
of the classroom! I am an instructional
programs developer with the Wisconsin
Educational Communications Board
and I provide teachers and students
with educational content using all
broadcast methods (TV, Web, Radio and
datacasting). My favorite part of the job
is providing professional development
workshops for teachers.
How did you get involved with the
Personal Financial Literacy Project? The ECB met with the DPI and identified
a need to provide a resource that would
support educators as they implement
the standards and prepare students to
thrive in the 21st Century.
Why financial literacy?
Personal
Financial Literacy is vital for all students
to be successful. Recent studies show
that financial literacy among young
people is at an all-time low, which
leads directly to the need for
a more
focused approach to personal finance
instruction for our students. We want to
ensure that every child has an education
that prepares them to be competent,
confident and financially literate citizens.
How can students and teachers
benefit from this program?
Educators will have a one-stop shop for
high quality personal financial literacy
content.
This Web site will model best
practices for teaching financial literacy
across the curriculum, provide teaching
resources, and links to instructional and
assessment tools. A discussion forum
will facilitate an opportunity for educators
to exchange ideas with colleagues
that will support student learning.
What curricular areas does this
program support?
All grade levels and
disciplines. Educators will be encouraged
to connect financial literacy throughout
the curriculum.
Can the program resources be used
by non-educators & others not
attending school? Absolutely! As I prepared
to direct this project, I learned so
much valuable information that I am now
applying to MY OWN financial planning!

Digital TV Explained
Making the Switch to Digital TV—Will your School be Ready? (PDF Download)
On February 18, 2009, all television broadcast in the United States will become digital.
The benefits of this transition will bring improved sound and picture quality, and ultimately a more efficient use of broadcast ‘space.’
For you and your school district, this means better quality, more choices, and more control over your television. Go to www.dtv.gov and www.dtvtransition.org for more information on this transition.
