Destinos: An Introduction to Spanish

Destinos teaches speaking, listening, and comprehension skills in Spanish. This telenovela, or Spanish soap opera, immerses students in everyday situations with native speakers and introduces the cultures, accents, and dialects of Mexico, Spain, Argentina, and Puerto Rico. Understanding of Spanish and appreciation of many Hispanic cultures increase as students become absorbed in the mysterious and entertaining story. The series is also appropriate for teacher professional development. (Fifty-two half-hour programs)

Financial Literacy: TEACH IT!

This professional development resource for teachers is designed around Wisconsin's new Personal Financial Literacy standards. Each of the prorams demonstrate effective teaching of each of the seven content standards in elementary, middle, and high-school classrooms.

French in Action

Become fluent in French by exploring the culture in this video series for college and high school classrooms and adult learners. The storyline of an American student and a young Frenchwoman's adventures in Paris and the French countryside is reinforced on-camera instruction. The series is also appropriate for teacher professional development. (Fifty-two half-hour programs)

Inside Writing Communities

Authentic classroom footage demonstrates how a writing workshop approach motivates intermediate students to become more proficient and independent writers. Programs feature ten teachers from around the country modeling effective teaching strategies in their classrooms and reflecting on their practice. It also features interviews with six national experts who provide insight into the successful implementation of the writing workshop in the upper elementary grades. (Sixteen half-hour programs)

Into the Book: Behind the Lesson

These programs feature Wisconsin teachers demonstrating effective use of learning strategies-using prior knowledge, making connections, questioning, visualizing, inferring, summarizing, evaluating, synthesizing-with students. Programs combine actual classroom footage with dialogue and teachers' personal reflections on instructional practices. (Nine 10-minute programs)

Money Track: From Wall Street to Your Street with John Bogle

This program examines America’s financial crisis and focuses on solutions and strategies for the average investor. MoneyTrack co-host Pam Krueger interviews legendary investor John Bogle about what happened on Wall Street and Americans' trust in the financial system. Bogle imparts his wisdom on topics covering speculation and complexity versus simplicity in investing. The second half of the one-hour special consists of a town-hall meeting, where Bogle and Krueger answer questions from the audience while Jack Gallagher, co-host of MoneyTrack,takes questions out into the field. (One 60-minute program)

Multicultural Education

This series helps educators to develop teaching strategies designed to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse K-12 student population. It explains the importance of respecting the traditions and ways of thinking of other cultures, and shows how to adjust the curriculum so all students can receive a quality education. (Six half-hour programs)

Naturally Obsessed: The Making of a Scientist!

This program looks at what it takes to be a scientist, focusing on a group of graduate students working towards their PhD and their mentor. (One 60-minute program)

Teaching Early Literacy

Renowned experts in reading and early childhood development, along with classroom teachers, focus on reading instruction for children in pre- kindergarten through first grade in this staff development series. Designed for teachers, reading specialists, parents and caregivers, this series explores emergent literacy using classroom demonstrations as illustrations. The series updates teachers on current views of reading, skilled readers, and effective reading instruction; introduces a strong theoretical base for the concept of emergent literacy and the conditions that support it; provides guidelines for the implementation of these ideas in the classroom; and encourages teachers to work in supportive and collaborative ways when implementing these concepts. (Twelve half-hour programs)

World Language Assessment: Get in the Mode!

This series assists teachers of world languages in the development and implementation of best practices for assessing student learning. Centered on the three modes of communication: interpretive, interpersonal and presentational, each of these programs emphasizes different elements related to student assessment. Each program includes a framework for approaching assessment, an overview of performance guidelines based on state and national standards, and methods for improving efficiency. World language educators from across Wisconsin provide the featured demonstrations and lessons. (Seven 15-minute programs)

Fundamental statistical processes are offered in this introductory statistics course for students in education, management and business, nursing, psychology and sociology, as well as researchers in any discipline. Performance Assessment

An alternative to standardized testing and an improvement on the usual teacher-made tests, performance assessment is an approach educators can use to obtain a more whole-task evaluation. Programs describe ways in which performance assessment methods and techniques can be used to evaluate skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, and writing, with a goal of working to improve instruction. (Three half-hour programs)
